Early Settlement & Establishment

Dale Borough, nestled within the City of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, has a unique and rich history. Established on March 9, 1891, Dale’s origins trace back to the early 19th century when it was part of Stonycreek Township. The area played a significant role in the Conemaugh Valley’s early history, lying along the Conemaugh Path, an important Indian trail and early overland route. Early settlers, including the Pickworth and Horner families, established the first farms and mills in the area, contributing to its growth and development.

Challenges and Resilience

Throughout its history, Dale has faced numerous challenges and changes. In 1958, the Dale School District merged with the Ferndale Area School District, and the construction of the Route 56 bypass led to the demolition of over 100 homes. The borough also endured the devastating 1977 Johnstown Flood, which claimed the lives of ten residents. Despite these hardships, Dale has maintained its close-knit community spirit and continues to honor its historical roots while looking towards the future.

Dale Borough Historical Society

The Dale Borough Historical Society was officially formed in September of 2019.
